Owner: Alabama Power Company

Location: Birmingham, AL

Building Area: ~120,000 SF

For the last couple of years, Birchfield Penuel & Associates has had the honor of helping Alabama Power breathe new life into the historic Powell Avenue Steam Plant in downtown Birmingham. Having supplied the city with power for 120 years, the client is hoping to leverage this asset to help power the resurgence of Birmingham’s downtown and adjacent Parkside District. After helping the client determine what uses would have the greatest impact on the development of the surrounding area, we began developing plans to adaptively reuse the historic building as a cultural and entertainment destination. The energy of the building’s new use will also spill into an adjacent new park and plaza the size of a city block, designed by national landscape architecture firm Nelson Byrd Woltz. Whether you are looking for restaurants, entertainment venues, or a beautiful outdoor space, the Powell Avenue Steam Plant will be the place to find it.
