In February 2020, just days before the Covid-19 pandemic changed daily life, Anniston Health & Rehab opened its doors to patients in need of rehabilitation therapies and seniors requiring long-term care. A central goal of the design was to maximize natural daylight for patients and visitors—a feature that became not just a luxury, but a vital source of comfort and connection once the facility was closed to outside visitors. As the facility director shared, the daylit spaces “saved lives.”

Set on a hilly lot adjoining the local hospital and neighboring historic districts, the building balances the proximity of critical care with the warmth of community and home. Working with the client’s established skilled nursing floor plan, our team strategically reimagined the layout—shifting active and public spaces from the building’s dark core to its naturally lit perimeter, creating brighter, healthier environments throughout.
