Owner: Noland Health Services
Location: Anniston, Alabama
Project Size: 47,299 sq. ft.
In February of 2020, just mere days before the Covid-19 Pandemic halted life as we know it, the Anniston Health & Rehab facility opened its doors to patients needing rehabilitation therapies before or after surgeries as well as seniors who require long-term nursing. One of the prevailing aims of the project was to increase daylight for patients and visitors alike – this proved to be not only a luxury but a critically necessary comfort to residents once Covid shut their doors. In the words of their facility director – this facility, and the daylit spaces we created, saved lives.
Located on a hilly lot that adjoins the local hospital campus and flanks historic neighborhoods to the south and west, the building is designed to provide the proximity of critical care with the comforts of community and home.
The client specializes in senior living and skilled nursing care facilities. They had an established floor plan that had been used at multiple previous campuses that informed our approach to this site. An important goal of the project was to take the client’s “template” for a skilled nursing facility and re-arrange public & active spaces from the dark core to the daylit perimeter through selective strategic movements of the plan.
