A new one-story Forensic Laboratory Lab/Medical Facility with approximately 25,000 SF located on a 5.5-acre lot on the University of Alabama at Huntsville’s campus.
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest crime laboratory systems, has been serving the community since its origins in toxicology in 1935. Today, the department assists law enforcement in the adjudication of cases and supports the safety of our citizens with seven laboratory facilities throughout the State. This new facility, a replacement for North Alabama counties, is of paramount importance, ensuring the continued safety and well-being of our communities.
Forensic services within the facility include Death Investigation, Drug Chemistry, and Forensic Biology. The facility is designed with state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems to ensure a safe and secure evidence investigation in the pursuit of justice. The building features a welcoming daylit lobby, evidence intake area, and conference center to serve the needs of law enforcement evidence handling and training. Each specialized service is in a separately secured building area with labs containing the latest forensic analysis equipment, collaborative workspaces, and maximized daylighting and views. In addition, staff are supported with respite spaces, including a quiet room and a break room directly adjacent to a staff courtyard, which is complete with an outdoor amphitheater-style classroom space.
